After the summer...
Let's face it, here in Ericeira we can't wait for summer to be over so we can say goodbye to the vacationers. The town gets quieter, the wind calms down, the light at sunrise and sunset takes on more vibrant tones, the smell of the sea is present in every corner and the perfect waves become more regular. That's when you really feel the pleasure of living in Ericeira... and there's a big risk in visiting this place: once you're there, it's hard to leave.
History of Ericeira
The town has very ancient origins, probably occupied by the Phoenicians.
According to legend, the name "Ericeira" derives from the expression "land of urchins", due to the abundance of sea urchins on its beaches. The town dates back to around 1000 BC, when the region began to be inhabited.
One of the most remarkable moments in Ericeira's recent history took place on October 5, 1910, when King Manuel II, accompanied by his mother, Queen Amélia, fled into exile from Praia dos Pescadores aboard the yacht D. Amélia, after the republican revolution that ended the monarchy. This episode marked the beginning of the 20th century in the town's history.
World Surfing Reserve
Ericeira was officially recognized as a World Surfing Reserve on October 14, 2011, by the international organization Save the Waves Coalition. It is the second World Surfing Reserve in the world. The criteria that led to its recognition included the quality and consistency of the waves, the historical and cultural importance of local surfing, the environmental richness of the area and the mobilization of the community.
The Ericeira World Surfing Reserve is part of the municipality of Mafra and covers a stretch of coastline with seven world-class waves, all located within a space of just four kilometers: Pedra Branca, Reef, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Cave, Crazy Left, Coxos and São Lourenço. This region is a surfer's paradise and one of the most popular destinations for this sport.
Despite its small size, the town of Ericeira is full of charm and history. With its relaxed atmosphere and slow-life energy, it's a perfect place for those looking for peace and good energy. The town center is extremely picturesque, with its squares, churches, fountains, pillory and alleys adorned with white and blue houses, often with clothes drying in the sun, creating a truly traditional and charming scene.
At the heart of the town is Praça da República, also known as Praça do Jogo da Bola, where there is a wide variety of restaurants, pastry stores, stores and much more. It's the ideal place for a quiet stroll and to taste the best of the local cuisine.
In Ericeira, there are activities for all tastes and interests and we are here to suggest the best places to visit and experiences to have. If you can't find what you're looking for, just ask us and we'll do our best to fulfill all your wishes.
The Jaime Lobo e Silva House of Culture
Formerly known as the Clube Recreativo Eiricense and the Grande Casino da Ericeira, this historic building is now the Casa da Cultura, which pays homage to local historian and musician Jaime Lobo e Silva. Here, you can enjoy cultural exhibitions and an atmosphere that reflects the town's rich heritage.
Churches and chapels
Religious devotion has always been an important part of the local culture of a fishing village. Many saints are venerated as patron saints and protectors of fishermen, who often lost their lives at sea. The presence of churches and chapels, such as the Church of São Sebastião or the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, is a fundamental part of Ericeira's religious and cultural heritage.
Santa Marta Park
This is a real activity center and an excellent place for those who don't want to spend the day at sea. The park offers a wide range of facilities, including a music room, an amphitheater overlooking the sea, playgrounds, a skating rink (with equipment rental), a squash room, tennis courts and even a mini-golf course. The park is also home to shopping areas and the historic Santa Marta mine, which is an additional point of interest.
Local gastronomy
Ericeira is a fishing village, which is strongly reflected in its gastronomy. The restaurants, both in the town and in the surrounding area, serve a wide variety of grilled fish dishes, fresh seafood and traditional snacks, perfect to accompany the breaks between dives. In recent years, the village has been revitalized by the surfing movement, which has brought a mixture of culinary influences from various parts of the world. Ericeira has thus become a place of flavors, where you can find classics of Portuguese cuisine and innovative novelties, making the gastronomic offer increasingly diverse.
Nightlife
After the sun sets over the sea, Ericeira takes on a new energy. The town has a vibrant nightlife, with bars all over the place. The offer is varied and adapted to all tastes, from the quietest to the liveliest, depending on everyone's mood. Whatever your pace, Ericeira guarantees unforgettable nights.
National Palace and Convent of Mafra
Built by King João V in the 18th century, the National Palace of Mafra is one of Portugal's most impressive palaces and the country's most important Baroque monument. This vast monumental complex consists of the Royal Palace, the Basilica and the Convent, with a total of 1,200 rooms and 4,700 doors and windows.
Among its wonders is the Library, one of the most beautiful and valuable in the world, with around 40,000 books on its shelves. The Basilica also houses six organs and two carillons, with 92 bells, which are unique in the world.
The Tapada Nacional de Mafra
Created in 1747 as a leisure and hunting park for King João V, the Tapada Nacional de Mafra is the largest walled natural area in the country, covering around 819 hectares.
In addition to the rich variety of flora, this space is home to a great diversity of fauna, with free-roaming animals such as deer, wild boar, fallow deer, reptiles and birds. The Tapada is the ideal place for relaxing walks, but also for group or family activities such as donkey rides, night visits and archery. It's a true paradise for nature lovers.
The José Franco Typical Village
At first glance, Aldeia Típica José Franco looks like a traditional Portuguese village, with its white and blue houses, a windmill and small workshops. However, it's a recreation of a typical village, built in the 1960s as a tribute to the potter José Franco's homeland.
The potter wanted to preserve and make known what characterizes a Portuguese village, but in a compact way. This curious and authentic space is a real journey back in time and offers moments of enchantment for kids and adults in the Mafra and Ericeira area.
Aldeia da Mata Pequena
Located on the outskirts of Mafra and Ericeira, less than an hour from Lisbon, Aldeia da Mata Pequena is a typical Saloia village.
Recovered for tourism, the village is made up of a dozen houses, all different, where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the region. The village also has a small farm with animals, which is especially popular with children.
Iberian Wolf Recovery Center
Created in 1987 by the Lobo Group at Quinta da Murta (Gradil), the Iberian Wolf Recovery Center is a unique space in the country dedicated to the preservation of the Iberian wolf. This center takes in wolves that cannot live in the wild because they have been trapped or mistreated.
The wolves live in a 17-hectare enclosure with rich and diverse vegetation, which allows them to adapt to their environment as naturally as possible. This center provides an excellent opportunity to observe this rare and important species for the ecosystem up close.
Being sustainable and ecological is no longer an option but a necessity. Trends in tourism confirm this, with travelers becoming increasingly eco-conscious. Today, when planning your vacation, concern for the environment is a key factor.
We can all make a difference in the fight against climate change. At Mar Puro, we are deeply committed to adopting sustainable and ecological practices, working to minimize our environmental impact.
